Expansion of Car-Sharing Services in Aachen Set to Continue

In the heart of Germany, the city of Aachen is taking significant strides towards sustainable mobility by expanding its car-sharing programme.

Since 1990, car-sharing has been an integral part of Aachen's transport landscape, providing a valuable contribution to traffic relief in the city. The current provider, operating since 1990, manages 73 car-sharing stations across the city area.

Recognising the effectiveness of car-sharing in reducing the number of private cars, the city's Mobility Strategy 2030 includes ambitious plans to expand the car-sharing system. The strategy aims to increase the use of car-sharing among Aachen residents, with a goal of one car-sharing vehicle for every 500 adult residents.

The new car-sharing guidelines, adopted in January 2025 as part of the Mobility Strategy 2030, specify the expansion of the car-sharing offer. The city plans a targeted expansion of the car-sharing network for the coming years to achieve this goal.

Citizens are invited to propose new car-sharing locations by September 30, 2025. The city's Mobility Committee adopted sharing guidelines in January 2025, which include provisions for a targeted and extensive expansion of car-sharing.

Currently, car-sharing stations are bound to specific locations in Aachen. However, the expansion plans aim to create a more flexible and accessible car-sharing network for all residents.
