Expansion of Chancellery defended, claiming cancellation would incur higher costs
The Federal Chancellery in Berlin is set for an expansion, a decision made by the previous federal government under Chancellor Angela Merkel. The expansion, which will cost approximately 770 million euros, is justified due to a significant increase in the number of Chancellery employees and space shortages.
The expansion will be built in the Chancellery Park on the western bank of the Spree. This decision was initially justified by Helge Braun, the then Chancellery Minister, in 2019. The current Chancellery lacks space, with Frei, the head of the Chancellery, stating that 900 Chancellery employees are currently spread across five different locations in Berlin.
The new building part of the expansion will have much higher security standards. This is crucial as the expansion aims to centralise the Chancellery's operations, potentially allowing for the abandonment of other locations and the cessation of high rental payments.
Frei criticised the current situation as inefficient due to constant travel and lack of meeting opportunities. The expansion could address these issues, providing a more streamlined and efficient work environment for the Chancellery's staff.
The expansion of the Berlin government headquarters is a significant project, aiming to address the space shortages and security needs of the Federal Chancellery. The project is expected to bring about a more centralised and efficient working environment for the Chancellery's employees.
