Expansion of fiber optic network in Stuttgart city, announced jointly by Deutsche Telekom AG and the Gigabit Region Stuttgart
In the picturesque district of Stuttgart-Rotenberg, known for its hilly terrain, vineyards, and stairs, a significant digital transformation is underway. The expansion of fiber optic connections, funded by the federal and state governments, will provide high-speed internet access to over 3,790 households, 30 educational institutions, and three hospitals.
Deutsche Telekom AG has been awarded the project, which will see approximately 37 kilometers of fiber optic cable and seven network distributors dedicated to the development of Stuttgart-Rotenberg. The expansion will cover 406 households and businesses in this district, where private sector expansion is not feasible.
Property owners must give their consent for the fiber optic connection, while renters only need to book a fiber optic tariff. Minister Thomas Strobl emphasized the importance of this comprehensive broadband expansion, stating that even in a metropolis with a strong economy, public funding remains indispensable to reach everyone, particularly in topographically challenging areas. He also noted that fast internet should not be a privilege for central locations, but a standard for all citizens.
The Gigabit project involves 178 municipalities, including the city of Stuttgart and five neighboring districts, in the expansion program. This event is not just the start of a construction project, but a commitment to comprehensive coverage in Stuttgart.
Moreover, the framework agreement with Telekom also provides for the rapid construction of a powerful 5G network. This development is expected to further enhance digital connectivity and services in the region.
As the expansion progresses, residents and businesses in Stuttgart-Rotenberg can look forward to surfing the internet at speeds of up to two gigabits per second, ensuring smooth and efficient digital operations for all.
