Expansion of Wilmot's Regional Reach Accelerated with Dan Mulkerin's Appointment
New Wilmot Webster Cancer Center to Open in Summer
Dan Mulkerin, M.D., has joined the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and the Wilmot Cancer Institute as the associate director of Regional Operations for Wilmot Cancer Institute and vice chair, Regional Operations for the Department of Medicine.
Mulkerin was invited by Ruth O'Regan, Charles A. Dewey Professor and chair of the Department of Medicine and Wilmot Cancer Institute's associate director for Mentoring and Career Development, to tour the URMC and the Wilmot Cancer Institute. During the tour, Mulkerin was impressed by the positive energy and clear vision at Wilmot Cancer Institute to become an NCI-designated cancer center.
The new Wilmot Webster Cancer Center will provide multidisciplinary cancer care and is located on Hard Road near Route 104. The facility will offer 18 exam rooms, infusion, and radiation therapy areas. Mulkerin plans to recruit additional faculty members to grow the capacity to care for patients and extend collaborative research throughout the region.
Mulkerin, who initially considered the University of Rochester Medical Center for his residency program in 1991, ultimately chose the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics for his residency and served there for more than 20 years. During his tenure at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Mulkerin cooperated with the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center regional cancer center network and opened several regional locations at the Carbone Cancer Center in the Midwest.
Mulkerin will help Wilmot Cancer Institute open its 14th location in Webster this summer. More than half of Wilmot's patients receive their care at regional locations, and Mulkerin emphasizes the importance of offering innovative care and clinical trials in the communities patients live in. He also aims to enhance education opportunities at Wilmot Cancer Institute.
Mulkerin toured parts of Wilmot's 27-county catchment area, including stops at regional locations in Greece, Canandaigua, and Dansville. He was impressed by the dedication and commitment of the Wilmot Cancer Institute to care for patients beyond Monroe County, including Batavia, Canandaigua, Wellsville, Olean, Hornell, and Elmira.
The new Wilmot Webster Cancer Center is a significant investment and effort by the Wilmot Cancer Institute to provide world-class cancer care to the communities it serves. With Mulkerin's expertise and vision, the center is poised to make a significant impact in the fight against cancer in the region.
