Exploring Dormagen's Landmarks: From the Rhine Tower to the Air-Raid Shelter

On September 14, Dormagen invites its residents and visitors to step back in time with the "Day of Open Monuments." This unique event, themed "Worthwhile: Priceless or Irreplaceable?", offers a chance to explore over 16 historical sites and more than 25 individual activities.

One of the highlights of the day is the reopening of the Rheinturm in Zons, a landmark of Dormagen, after more than 20 years of vacancy. The opening event will take place at 10 am at Rheinstraße 1 in Zons. Visitors can view a local history exhibition, the original spiral staircase, and the view from the roof at the Rheinturm. Tours are free, limited to 20 people each, and can be booked in advance online at www.tinyurl.com/tourrheinturm.

Jost Auler, Peter Bruns, and Volker Kuhlmann will lead a guided tour about the rediscovery of the imperial Bavarian army camp of 1642 through the Zonser Heath. Meanwhile, Gerd Bock, the new honorary monument conservation officer, will offer a consultation from 12 to 2 pm under the chestnut tree on Mühlenstraße in the Zons old town. This consultation offer is a special feature of this year's "Day of Open Monuments."

Numerous monument owners and volunteers offer a varied local program. The city administration of Dormagen is participating in the nationwide event program, which is initiated by the "German Foundation for Monument Protection."

The program includes the Roman UNESCO World Heritage site, the Knechtsteden Monastery, the memorial cemetery in Dormagen-Mitte, and the Jewish cemetery in the Zonser Heath. Other sites opening their doors include the Bunker Memorial Site in the Raphaelshaus, the historic Friedestrom castle, the district museum, the Rheintorkapelle, the windmill, and the air raid shelter at the Feldtor.

Mayor Erik Lierenfeld expresses gratitude towards all volunteers and associations for preserving the city's history. Participation in all events on September 14 is free. For more information, visit the event's website at www.ourwebsite/monumentday.

Join us on September 14 for a day filled with history, discovery, and community spirit as we celebrate Dormagen's "Day of Open Monuments."
