Explosive devices discovered in Beckinghausen: trigger activated yet evacuation not required

On August 21, 2025, the Westphalia-Lippe Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) conducted an inspection at a former sports field located on Kreuzstraße in Lünen, Germany. During the inspection, two World War II bombs were discovered.

The first bomb, found at one of the suspected unexploded ordnance points, had already detonated upon impact, requiring no further action. However, the second bomb did not detonate and will require a controlled detonation on the same date.

The controlled detonation of the remaining World War II bomb will take place in Westphalia-Lippe, Germany, on Thursday, August 21. The safety radius for the detonation is 50 meters, and no evacuation is necessary.

The Lünen Fire Department will secure the detonation site with sandbags to ensure public safety. The Westphalia-Lippe EOD Service is responsible for both the inspection and the controlled detonation of the bomb.

The purpose of the inspection was to identify and neutralize suspected unexploded ordnance. The discovery of the explosives was made by local police during a routine inspection on August 21.

The Westphalia-Lippe EOD Service is a highly trained and experienced team responsible for handling such situations. The public is advised to stay clear of the area during the controlled detonation for safety reasons.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing presence of World War II ordnance in many parts of Germany and the importance of regular inspections and careful handling of such finds.
