Ford Announces New Supercar Designed for High-Speed Desert Racing
Extremely Powerful Desert Racing Car Could Represent Ford's Most Daring Innovation To Date
Ford is set to shake up the supercar market with a new project that promises to be a paradigm shift. Under the leadership of CEO Jim Farley, the American automaker plans to develop a new supercar specifically designed for high-speed desert racing, featuring advanced performance and durability tailored to the harsh desert environment.
Jim Farley, who has a passion for racing and oversaw the Ford Mustang's return to circuit racing, participating in several events himself, revealed the focus of the next supercar project. The new vehicle is intended to be tailored towards high-speed sand and gravel running.
The project is still in the conceptual stage, and details are limited, but Ford has confirmed that the new supercar will pack 1,000 horsepower under the hood. The specific engine for the hybrid powertrain is unclear at this time.
What is known is that the new supercar will have adjustable suspension for on-the-fly tweaks, customizable driver settings, and is expected to be capable of competing in the toughest desert races. Ford's success in major off-road races such as the Baja 1000, King of the Hammers, Rebelle Rally, Mint 400, and NORRA 1000, suggests that the brand has the know-how to create a formidable desert racer.
The new supercar is not intended to replicate the same formula as existing vehicles like Porsche's 911 Dakar or Lamborghini's HuracaΜn Sterrato. Instead, Ford aims to carve out its own niche in the high-speed desert racing market.
Matt Crisara, a contributing writer for Motor1, shares Ford's excitement about the new project. Crisara, who earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona School of Journalism and enjoys sim-racing, FPV drones, and the great outdoors in his free time, has a passion for cars and motorsports. Previously, Crisara worked at Circuit Of The Americas F1 Track and Speed City.
Ford's commitment to off-road racing is not new. The brand achieved an overall podium finish in the Dakar Rally, one of the most difficult off-road races in the world, during its first attempt. The Ranger Raptor pickup truck, which was entered into the Baja 1000 with only necessary modifications for the event, including a snorkel, off-road lights, a roll cage, fire extinguisher, plexiglass rear windows, a 160-gallon fuel tank, and 17-inch forged-alloy wheels, successfully crossed the line in just over 26 hours, requiring only routine maintenance during fuel stops.
Farley has stated that the final product would be suitable for competition, suggesting that Ford is serious about its desert racing ambitions. As more details about the new supercar project emerge, car enthusiasts and racing fans alike can look forward to a new contender in the high-speed desert racing scene.
