False propagation of a violent incident in Samrala, Punjab, occurs with a communal misinterpretation, falsely portrayed as originating from West Bengal

In recent days, a viral video has circulated, alleging a violent incident took place in West Bengal, India, in 2025. However, after a thorough investigation and verification by various news outlets, it has been confirmed that the incident did not occur in West Bengal, but in Punjab's Samrala.

The video, which is a CCTV recording, shows a violent event involving a lawyer named Kultar Singh and an attacker named Surinder Singh. The FIR copy of the case, accessed by reporters, lists the names of the attacker and the victim as Billu alias Surinder Singh and Kultar Singh, respectively.

Contrary to the viral claims, the incident does not have a communal angle, as confirmed by the local police officials. The attacker, Surinder Singh, has a history of quarreling with his neighbors, and reports suggest he may be a drug addict.

The news reports provide more details about the incident in Punjab. Surinder Singh, the attacker, was arrested in connection to the incident, and the FIR was filed at the Samrala police station under Sections 118(1), 127(1), and 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing hurt by dangerous means, wrongful confinement, and attempted murder.

The viral claims about the communal nature of the incident are untrue, as confirmed by the police and the evidence presented in the FIR. Furthermore, the claim that the attacker is a Muslim is also false.

The incident can be traced back to several news reports, including Hindustan Times and Jansatta, which have provided additional details about the incident in Punjab. As of now, no clear information has been found to identify the exact actual city in India where the violence occurred instead of West Bengal.

It is crucial to verify information before sharing it, especially in sensitive matters such as this one. Misinformation can lead to unnecessary panic and confusion, and it is essential to promote accuracy and truth in our discussions.
