The criminal investigation into former Trump national security adviser John Bolton has been re-opened, with the FBI acting under the direction of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was instructed by former President Donald Trump to pursue the investigation related to national security and the possible illegal handling of classified documents.

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press", Vice President JD Vance stated that the investigation will proceed only if Bolton is found to have broken the law. Vance emphasized the importance of letting the law drive the determinations in the investigation.

The search of Bolton's home in Bethesda, Maryland, was approved by a federal magistrate judge and was followed by a search of his office in Washington, D.C. However, John Bolton told CNN that he was unaware of the FBI search. Trump also claimed he wasn't given advance notice of the search.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) has suggested that the search could have political undertones, potentially targeting critics of Donald Trump. Krishnamoorthi believes the search could be a message to other potential or current critics of Trump. Roger Stone, who received a pardon from Trump in 2020, celebrated the development, referencing the raid on Bolton's home.

Trump took issue with John Bolton's criticism of his decision to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also accused Bolton of making it harder for him to secure a peace deal to end the conflict.

FBI Director Kash Patel, who had previously included Bolton in a list of enemies, posted a vague message on social media, appearing to reference the raid.

Notably, the Department of Justice had launched a criminal investigation into Bolton during Trump's first term. However, the DOJ ended the probe and dropped a lawsuit seeking to block the former Trump official from getting any proceeds from his memoir's sales under the Biden administration.

Vance has claimed that the investigation into John Bolton is not politically motivated. Despite the ongoing investigation, it remains to be seen what findings will emerge and how they may impact Bolton.
