FCSB of Romania secures position in Europa League's main competition round.
In a thrilling night of European football, Romanian powerhouse FCSB qualified for the main phase of the Europa League competition on August 28. The match, held at home in Bucharest, ended with a convincing 3-0 (1-0) victory against Scotland's Aberdeen.
The contest began evenly matched, with both teams showcasing their skills. However, the tide turned in FCSB's favour following a penalty award in the 40th minute, after a VAR review confirmed a FCSB player had been fouled inside the penalty area. The resulting spot-kick was converted, giving FCSB a crucial lead.
The second half began with a bang, as Adrian Şut scored a stunning goal from 25 meters in the 52nd minute. The goal seemed to deflate Aberdeen, as they posed no more threats for the remainder of the match. Three minutes later, Florin Tănase had a shot saved by the Aberdeen goalkeeper, Mitov, from inside the box.
The third goal for FCSB came in the 59th minute, securing a comfortable 3-0 win and a 5-2 aggregate score. Aberdeen played with 10 men for the remainder of the first half due to a sending off, which undoubtedly affected their performance.
FCSB coach Elias Charalambous expressed his pleasure at qualifying for the group stage, stating it is a significant achievement for the team and its supporters. The coach also expressed interest in potentially facing Jose Mourinho's team, Fenerbahce, in the group stage.
Meanwhile, Universitatea Craiova also secured their place in the group stage of the Conference League, following a 2-0 win over Istanbul Bașakșehir. The Romanian team will receive EUR 4.3 million for their qualification. FCSB, on the other hand, will receive EUR 7 million from UEFA for qualifying for the group stage of the Europa League.
