FDP advocates for investigation of potential spots for parking facilities

Mönchengladbach, as per the FDP's wishes, needs to devise innovative strategies to address the pressing parking predicament. One possible approach could entail offering evening parking in parking structures or on grocery store parking lots.

In a bid to create a more modern and digitally-focused city, the FDP in Mönchengladbach has proposed the implementation of an After-Work Parking project, inspired by the successful model in DĂŒsseldorf.

The After-Work Parking project in DĂŒsseldorf offers over 2,000 digitally bookable and affordable night-time parking spaces across supermarket lots and parking garages. This innovative approach, according to Daniel Winkens, deputy chairman of the FDP in Mönchengladbach, demonstrates how a city can function through cooperation instead of regulation, and through the use of an app instead of bureaucracy.

While there are already some private rentals of parking spaces via apps, there is no city-wide concept for this in DĂŒsseldorf or Mönchengladbach. However, Reiner Gutowski, an FDP candidate for mayor, believes that a similar concept could be implemented in Mönchengladbach.

Gutowski suggests that the city should actively approach supermarkets, churches, or schools to bring about a coordinated solution for the After-Work Parking project. The FDP in Mönchengladbach has already reached out to supermarkets Edeka and Lidl, the churches Herz-Jesu and St. Josef, and the schools Comenius-Gymnasium and Marienschule to discuss a potential collaboration.

In Mönchengladbach, parking on a supermarket parking lot at night costs 30 euros a month. Gutowski believes that the concept, if implemented, would not only be smart but also relieve entire neighborhoods and use existing spaces efficiently.

Achim Wyen, FDP faction leader in the DĂŒsseldorf city council, suggests that the After-Work Parking model from DĂŒsseldorf could help compensate for the loss of parking space in residential areas in Mönchengladbach, particularly in areas repurposed for bike lanes, outdoor dining, or greenery.

The After-Work Parking project in DĂŒsseldorf is growing rapidly, although it currently lacks a city-wide concept. The night-time parking spaces in DĂŒsseldorf are priced affordably, with no specific price mentioned in the text. The project is also easy to use, making it an attractive solution for commuters.

The FDP in Mönchengladbach calls for a swift examination of suitable areas and the development of a Mönchengladbach After-Work Park model, which would include digital booking options. If successful, this could provide a much-needed solution to the parking challenges faced by many city residents.
