Federal agents' raid on a factory in Central New York leaves stunned owners who express feelings of distress, stating, "We feel terrorized."
In the small town of Cato, New York, a shockwave was felt on Thursday when over 50 federal agents and law enforcement officials raided the Nutrition Bar Confectioners plant, a local business that employs around 220 people.
According to reports, about 70 of the 150 employees working at the plant on Thursday were taken away during the raid. The Schmidt family, who own the business, were shocked and alarmed by the incident. They stated that their hiring practices and standards are compliant with federal law, and all employees had proper documentation to work.
The specific crimes being investigated have not been disclosed, but the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is looking into allegations of criminal activities related to the Nutrition Bar Confectioners. The investigation is focusing on possible violations involving food production standards and ingredient sourcing irregularities.
Lenny Schmidt, one of the brothers who own the business, expressed concern for the fear the other Hispanic workers may be experiencing after the raid. He stated that federal agents detained anyone who was Hispanic working in the factory, and the others were released. The Schmidt family is unaware of what crimes are being investigated.
Jeff Schmidt, another brother, stated that the factory was shut down for the rest of Thursday, and it resumed operations on Friday with a depleted workforce. The later shifts were told not to come to work after the raid. The Schmidt family is trying to support their employees, including reaching out to some families who have children left behind.
The Schmidt family has received positive messages and support from the community. Some people even applied for jobs at the factory on Friday. However, the brothers questioned whether anyone would want to work at the factory after the raid and may have to replace some highly skilled workers.
ICE won't disclose how many people they detained, but the state reported more than 40 people were detained. Some employees detained had government documents in their cars showing they were legally in the country, but they weren't allowed to get them before being taken away. The Schmidt family is uncertain about how many employees will return and if the investigation will continue at their factory.
Lenny Schmidt expressed his concern for the fear the other Hispanic workers may be experiencing after the raid. He stated, "We have to make sure they feel safe and secure at work." The Nutrition Bar Confectioners plant resumed operations on Friday, but the outcome of the investigation and the future of the workforce remains uncertain.
