Federal employment applications showed a decline in May, following a surge in applications attributed to Dogecoin (DOGE) in previous months.
In recent times, the job market in Washington D.C. and the scientific research and development sector has been experiencing a weaker-than-average activity, largely due to federal spending cuts. This trend is particularly noticeable in top contractor roles, which have seen a significant decline.
This pullback in job postings has a ripple effect, negatively impacting federal workers actively seeking new roles. Tens of thousands of government employees have reportedly taken a deferred resignation, but it remains unclear whether the labor market can absorb this influx of specialized, highly educated workers.
The analysis of this trend was conducted using Indeed's extensive pool of hundreds of millions of job seeker profiles. The researchers identified active job seekers who listed the federal government as their current or (newly) former employer.
Interestingly, for all other roles, job postings have only dropped by 0.6% over the same period. However, job postings for the 25 employers with the most dollars received from government contracts have experienced a more notable pullback, falling by 15% since January 20.
Despite this, there are no search results providing a list or data on the 25 largest employers in the USA that have seen a 15% reduction in job order volume on Indeed since January 2020.
The recent downturn in job postings is concerning because it is happening in a rapidly approaching labor market tipping point where further declines are likely to translate into weaker job gains and rising unemployment. This is particularly true for young workers and recent graduates who are already struggling to find jobs amid muted hiring activity.
Broadly divesting from public goods and services will likely have uncertain longer-term implications for many institutions and functions that rely on government stability and investment. As the economy continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these trends unfold and what strategies might be employed to mitigate their impact.
