Festival in Düsseldorf from 11th to 30th of September
Düsseldorf's "Altstadtherbst" Cultural Festival Expands Boundaries for 2023
The vibrant city of Düsseldorf is gearing up for its annual cultural extravaganza, the "Altstadtherbst" festival, which will run from September 1st to October 1st this year. This year marks a significant expansion for the festival, with new and unusual performance venues being opened throughout the city.
Originally launched in 1991, the festival has evolved into a wide and open-minded cultural event, attracting up to 25,000 visitors annually. This year, it will host more than 60 events, featuring up to 500 artists from around the world.
One of the highlights of this year's festival is the German premiere of "Passagers" by Les 7 doigts de la main. This production, a mix of circus, theater, illusion, music, and dance, follows a group of strangers who meet on a train, their destinations differing but existing for a moment in a shared reality. The story involves the characters oscillating between reflection and hope for the future, turning their compartment into a stage for confessions.
Elida Almeida, a singer born on the island of Santiago, will perform on September 30. Almeida is known for her performances in major world music centers in Europe, Africa, and North America, with her performances ranging from melancholic to energetically unbound.
Another noteworthy event is a performance by actor Matthias Brandt and pianist Jens Thomas. On September 15, at 5 pm and 8 pm, they will perform "The Medical Case of Robert Schumann" in the theater tent. This production is based on Peter Härtling's novel "Schumann's Shadow," which tells the story of the genius composer who was active in Düsseldorf but was also plagued by mental health issues and spent the rest of his life in a mental institution in Bonn.
The festival initially used churches, museums, industrial spaces, and galleries in the old town for cultural presentations. However, this year, it has expanded beyond its original form, with performances taking place in various locations throughout Düsseldorf.
