On Friday, August 29th, the Willy-Brandt Comprehensive School's canteen in Marl played host to the annual sports ceremony. Over 250 guests gathered to honour 170 athletes and volunteers who have made significant strides in various sports disciplines.

Mayor Werner Arndt kicked off the event with a speech, praising the athletes and deserving personalities for their outstanding achievements. He emphasised the importance of the event, stating that the performances of the athletes are a "shield for Marl."

Among the honourees were the young athletes of Ski Union Marl, who were recognised for their numerous successes in cheerleading. The "Sparkling Freaks" and "Goosebumps" teams, in particular, impressed the audience with their energetic routines.

The "Sparkling Freaks" and "Goosebumps" were not the only cheerleading teams to shine. The Ladypanthers of the Stunt and Dance Company Marl won the NRW state championship in cheerleading.

The swimmers of Wasserfreunde Marl and VfL Huels also shone, winning several championship titles in relay races. Meanwhile, Kevin Exner of Rookies won the World Championship title in Freestyle Skateboarding, and Jamie Lindtner claimed the World Championship title in Karate Kumite.

The archery club and the Marl Minors martial arts group (DJK Lenkerbeck) performed show acts during the event, adding to the excitement. The PerSe! formation of DJK Lenkerbeck also won the German championship in showdance.

André Möllenken (VC Marl) and Carsten Schwarma (VfB Huels) hosted the evening with charm and humour, while DJ Tom Wilke provided musical entertainment. The event concluded with a photo session by Stadtsportverband Marl / R. Deinl.

In addition to the athletes, several volunteers were honoured for their decades of service to various sports clubs. Udo Wintjes, Elke Heuver, Klaus Müller, Rolf Hendrich, Johannes Westermann, Melissa Krüger-Jakob, Markus Bischof, Anne Pulver, and Melissa Krüger-Jakob were all recognised for their dedication.

The hockey youth team of VfB 48/64 Huels also received recognition, winning the Westphalian championship in the hall.

The annual sports ceremony in Marl is a testament to the city's rich sporting culture and the dedication of its athletes and volunteers. It serves as a celebration of the achievements of these individuals and a source of inspiration for future generations.
