Financial institution GCB Bank is looking towards TikTok content creators, proposing a payment solution that goes directly to them.
In a significant move aimed at supporting Ghana's thriving creative economy, TikTok has proposed the establishment of a direct payment channel for its creators in Ghana. This initiative is expected to simplify earnings receipt for content creators, reduce transaction costs, and enhance transparency.
The proposal has received a warm welcome from Ghana's Communication and Digital Technology Minister, Samuel Nartey George. Minister George believes this move will cut out costly intermediaries, ensuring greater financial benefit for Ghanaian talent, and deepening confidence in the digital economy.
GCB Bank Plc, with its robust infrastructure and connectivity with MasterCard and Visa, is at the forefront of this initiative. The bank is ready to process direct payouts through cards, mobile money, and bank accounts, providing TikTok creators with faster access to their earnings.
A delegation from GCB Bank met with Minister George and Tokumbo Ibrahim, TikTok's West Africa representative, to discuss a comprehensive payout framework. Ibrahim noted that the proposal would be reviewed, and TikTok is open to regionally compliant solutions.
If approved, GCB and TikTok's technical teams will collaborate with regulators to establish seamless integration for payouts. Abraham Ferguson, Chief of Staff at GCB Bank, emphasized the bank's readiness for TikTok integration.
This development is expected to improve the financial situation of TikTok creators in Ghana, who often face income loss due to third-party agents and high transaction costs. The move also aligns with the government's efforts to boost the creative economy and deepen confidence in the digital economy.
TikTok's West Africa representative, Tokumbo Ibrahim, reiterated the platform's commitment to finding regionally compliant solutions, ensuring a fair and transparent environment for all its creators. The exact details of the implementation are yet to be finalised, but this proposal marks a significant step towards supporting Ghana's digital economy and its creative talent.
