Fire crews hailing from the cities of Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen are en route to tackle a raging forest fire in Spain.

The German forest fire module is set to be deployed to the province of Extremadura, Spain, to assist in fighting an active, large-scale forest fire. According to news aktuell, the deployment is expected to commence on Tuesday.

On Monday, two leaders of the German forest fire module flew to Madrid to make contact with local authorities and coordinate the details of the deployment. The forest fire module from Bonn arrived in San Sebastián, Spain on Monday night, and was joined by a contingent from Lower Saxony in France. The combined unit now consists of 67 deployment forces.

In addition to the German deployment forces, two French units are also involved in the operation. A Slovakian helicopter for aerial fire fighting is planned for the Extremadura deployment area.

The North Rhine-Westphalian unit was bolstered by the addition of two additional tanker trucks, bringing the total number of vehicles in the convoy to 21. The convoy traveled through central and southern France and crossed the Spanish border on Monday.

A Finnish module for ground-based vegetation fire fighting is also en route to Extremadura.
