Fire Department personnel sustains injury during fire suppression efforts in Chaves

A firefighter was injured during a significant blaze that broke out in the municipality of Chaves on Monday afternoon. The incident, which has been described as the most serious situation in the Planalto de Monforte Parish, has caused widespread destruction and required the mobilization of over 120 firefighters and around 35 vehicles.

The fire started at 13:20 on Monday and quickly spread, engulfing an agricultural warehouse in Bobadela with hay, straw, and grain used to feed the animals of a dairy farm. Despite the best efforts of the firefighters, the warehouse was destroyed in the blaze. Fortunately, the cows' stable was not affected, but the animals' food was completely destroyed.

The sub-regional commander of Alto Tâmega and Barroso, Artur Mota, confirmed the firefighter's injury to Lusa. The firefighter, who is from the Mesão Frio station in the Vila Real district, sustained a shoulder dislocation during the battle against the flames. The firefighter was transported to Chaves hospital for observation, and no further information has been provided about their current condition.

The firefighters faced strong winds and projections during the fire, making their efforts to contain the blaze even more challenging. In response to the incident, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) mobilized 249 operatives and 80 vehicles for the incident in Chaves.

The fire was brought under control early this morning, but much vigilance will be required throughout the day due to the perimeter reached by the fire, according to Artur Mota. The incident is located in the north of the Vila Real district, and this is the most serious situation to occur in the Planalto de Monforte Parish as a result of the fire.

The fire in Chaves has been a significant incident, and our thoughts are with the injured firefighter and all those affected by the blaze. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
