Firefighters from Germany are currently operative in northern Spain
The overall situation with the forest fires in Spain has shown some improvement, thanks to the end of an extreme heat wave. To help combat the ongoing blazes, German firefighters have been dispatched to support their Spanish colleagues.
Since early August, the most severe forest fires in years have been raging in Spain and its neighboring country Portugal. In response, a team of 67 firefighters from Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, accompanied by 21 vehicles, have been working tirelessly since Tuesday in the town of Jarilla, Extremadura.
After bringing the fire under control in Jarilla, the German team traveled about 290 kilometers north to the village of La Baña in the Castile and León region. The Germans arrived in La Baña on Saturday, according to Frank Frenser, the spokesperson of the task force.
In La Baña, the firefighters have been protecting the village from approaching flames. A resident of the region shared photos and videos of the German firefighters and their vehicles navigating the narrow streets of the village on the X platform. The Spanish police also published a video showing the Germans arriving in Puebla de Sanabria, a nearby town.
Sadly, at least eight people have died in both countries due to the forest fires. Around 330 residents of La Baña have been evacuated, according to "Leonoticias".
Preliminary estimates by the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) suggest that around 6,840 square kilometers of forest and vegetation areas have been destroyed in both countries since the beginning of the year. This is equivalent to almost 958,000 football fields or more than a third of the area of Schleswig-Holstein (15,763 square kilometers).
The names of the German firefighters from Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia working since Wednesday in the Spanish region of Castile and León are not publicly disclosed in the search results. The team consists of 67 firefighters, including 14 from Lower Saxony and others from North Rhine-Westphalia cities such as Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen.
These brave firefighters are making a significant difference in the fight against the wildfires in Spain. Their hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated by the local communities and the Spanish authorities. We hope for continued success in their efforts to contain the fires and prevent further loss of life and property.
