First School Street Launch in Bergisch Gladbach Successfully Underway
Bergisch Gladbach, a city in Cologne, has taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety of its schoolchildren by introducing the first school street at KGS "In der Auen". This pilot project, part of a broader initiative launched in 2023 across various districts, including Ehrenfeld, has now been permanently established by the city of Cologne.
The school street, implemented a week after the start of the new school year, has been met with overwhelming approval. Moni Kellermann, chairperson of the school parents' association at the KGS, expressed her satisfaction, stating that the children felt safer. School principal Anton Pezl concurred, confirming that both residents and the majority of parents welcome the measure, and the start has been smooth.
Ragnar Migenda, First Deputy Mayor of Bergisch Gladbach, emphasized that the measure creates a safe infrastructure for all road users. The city administration appreciates the trust placed in their mobility expertise.
During restricted hours between 7:30 and 8:15 AM and 2:30 to 3:15 PM, the street remained almost car-free. Motorized traffic diverted to surrounding streets as planned, ensuring minimal disruption to the local community.
The city demonstrated openness and willingness to cooperate in creating the school street, with the school, parents, and residents all playing active roles. Ragnar Migenda thanked everyone involved for the successful start of the school street.
The city is available for dialogue with people on the ground regarding the school street. If you have any questions or suggestions, you can contact them at [email protected]. The city aims to make the school route safer for children while maintaining the quality of life in the neighborhood.
The city will continue to closely accompany the implementation of the school street, with the hope of developing measures that meet a broad consensus. This initiative is a testament to Bergisch Gladbach's commitment to the safety and wellbeing of its young residents.
