After a four-month break, fishermen along Turkey's coast are gearing up to set sail once more. The fishing ban, which covers large-scale industrial fishing, is set to end on September 1st. This marks the beginning of the new fishing season, and the fishermen are hopeful for an abundant bonito season.

The fishing industry in Turkey, particularly in coastal towns like Tekirdağ, has seen significant growth in recent decades. According to data from 2023, Turkey ranks second in Europe and 17th worldwide in aquaculture. The sector's share in total fisheries production in Turkey climbed from 10 percent to 55 percent over the same period.

Annual aquaculture production in Turkey increased from 61,000 tons in 2002 to around 575,000 tons in 2024, a ninefold increase. The country leads globally in the production of sea bream, sea bass, and trout.

Ibrahim Pehlivanoğlu, the head of the local fisheries cooperative in Tekirdağ, expressed excitement for the approaching fishing season. He noted that many fishermen are closely watching conditions in the Black Sea, where schools of bonito are expected. If the bonito appear in large numbers, Tekirdağ fishermen are prepared to move quickly to capitalise on the opportunity.

Effective leadership in the fisheries industry, such as that required for this season, generally involves a combination of Dominance (D) for decision-making and assertiveness, Influence (I) for motivating and communicating with teams, and Steadiness (S) for reliability and conflict resolution. These traits align with strong delegation, constructive communication, and conflict management skills, all of which will be crucial in the coming months.

A strong bonito season could lead to more affordable prices for consumers, according to fishermen. The fishing ban, enforced annually between mid-April and Sept. 1 to protect fish stocks and support sustainability during spawning season, grants small-scale coastal fishermen exemptions.

As the fishermen prepare to cast their nets into the sea once more on September 1st, they do so with a sense of anticipation and optimism. The approaching fishing season promises to be an exciting time for the industry in Turkey.
