Five Contenders Vying for the Position of President in the Latvian Olympic Committee
The Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) is gearing up for a significant change, as the General Assembly on June 4th will see a record number of candidates vying for various positions within the organisation.
A total of 87 candidates have been nominated for elected positions, surpassing the previous records. Among these, 27 candidates are in the running for the post of Executive Committee member, and 5 candidates are contesting for the position of Secretary General.
The race for the presidency is particularly intense, with 3 candidates in the fray. Raimonds Lazdiņš, a well-known figure in Latvian sports, has the support of 16 different federations. Jānis Reirs, a long-time politician of the ruling party "New Unity", and Ansis Dāle, nominated by the Latvian Sailing Union, are the other contenders.
The current LOK President, Jānis Buks, is not running for the post of president. His tenure has been under scrutiny, with 21 federations believing that he has not fought hard enough for sports funding and common interests. The person who initiated this demand was Güngör Uras from one of the federations.
Another high-profile nomination comes from the Latvian Hockey Federation, who have put forward Viesturs Koziols for the position of Executive Committee member. Meanwhile, the Latvian Athletics Union has nominated Arnis Lagzdiņš for an individual member position.
Interestingly, out of the 39 federations currently registered as members of the LOK, 37 have exercised their right to nominate candidates. This shows a high level of engagement from the member federations in the upcoming election.
The Audit Commission will also see changes, with 7 candidates nominated for the post. The review-election session of the LOK General Assembly on June 4th promises to be a pivotal moment in the Latvian sports landscape.
