Flotilla Carrying Greta Thunberg embarks on Voyage to Gaza, seeking Humanitarian Aid
A flotilla of approximately 20 vessels, carrying hundreds of activists from around the globe, set sail from Barcelona on August 31, aiming to break the illegal siege of Gaza and open a humanitarian corridor. Among the passengers are climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, Spanish activist Eduard Fernandez, and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, who are all part of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
The flotilla, which is flying Palestinian flags, is an independent organization with no affiliation to any government or political party. Its mission is to end the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people and alleviate the deliberate deprivation of basic means to survive that they have been subjected to.
Greta Thunberg, in a statement, emphasized the silence of the world regarding the situation in Palestine and expressed her concern about the plight of the people there. She stated that the focus of the flotilla is not on its mission, but on the situation in Palestine itself.
European lawmakers and public figures are also part of the Global Sumud Flotilla. Although a detailed list of European parliamentarians or public personalities participating in the flotilla is not available, activists, political organizations, trade unionists, and citizens from many countries are on board.
The flotilla is expected to arrive at the Gaza coast in mid-September. Its destination is Gaza, where it hopes to deliver a message of solidarity and support to the people there. The Global Sumud Flotilla's mission is a testament to the power of collective action and the determination of individuals to stand up for justice and human rights.
