Focus on the economy, folks!
In the heart of Europe, the German economy is grappling with a critical economic situation, and the democratic parties are under pressure to take action. According to a recent survey conducted by the polling institute INSA on behalf of BILD am Sonntag, over 60% of the public is "very worried" about the general economic development, which is a record high since the beginning of the pandemic.
The surveys, carried out between September 8 and September 12, 2025, involved 1204 eligible voters. The results indicate a high level of public concern about the economic development, suggesting a need for urgent action.
The economic competitiveness of Germany is declining, according to the coalition analysis. To improve its standing, a key strategy being proposed is reducing corporate taxes. However, this proposal is not without controversy.
The democratic parties find themselves divided on the issue of debt and relief measures. Supporters of the SPD and Greens favor loosening the debt brake but are against more relief for businesses, while supporters of the Union and FDP welcome business relief but oppose loosening the debt brake. The question of how to finance the business relief remains unresolved among Union and FDP supporters.
One proposal to fund this relief is for the state to exceed the debt brake due to economic challenges. However, opinions on this proposal are divided, with 40% supporting and 50% opposing the relaxation of debt rules.
The public's expectations are high, as they are looking to the democratic parties for solutions to the economic challenges. Two-thirds of Germans support greater financial relief for businesses. Yet, they would rather allocate the available funds to other purposes.
The democratic parties are being called upon to make demands on their supporters to address the economic concerns. Achieving progress will require these parties to overcome their differences and make demands on their supporters. Overcoming differences and working together could be key to finding a solution for the German economy.
The surveys also reveal that the economic situation has reached a critical point, necessitating immediate action from the democratic parties. The public's faith in their ability to address the situation is evident, as both governing and opposition democratic parties face increasing pressure to act.
As the German economy continues to struggle, it is clear that the democratic parties must find a way to bridge their differences and provide the necessary relief to businesses and the economy as a whole. The future of Germany's economic competitiveness may well depend on it.
