Football Fantasy League 2025: Notable and Disappointing Clashes by Positions for Week 1

NFL 2025 Week 1: Key Matchups and Notable Performances

As the NFL 2025 season kicks off, several teams and players are poised to make an impact in Week 1. Here's a roundup of some of the key matchups and notable performances.

The New York Jets, under their new defensive-minded head coach, are averaging the third fewest plays per game (59.4) this season. However, their secondary remains formidable. On the other hand, the Cincinnati Bengals defense, which allowed the second most touchdowns (11) to the tight end position in 2024, will be tested against some strong tight ends in the upcoming games.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are averaging a mid 62.6 plays per game this season. Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Atlanta Falcons are defenses that gave up the most fantasy points to quarterbacks in 2024 (20.5, 20.1, and 19.8 respectively). This could potentially benefit Steelers' quarterback in their upcoming games against these teams.

The Eagles' defense, which allowed the second fewest rushing touchdowns per game (0.5) last season, had a tough start to the season, allowing two rushing touchdowns to Javonte Williams in the first half of Week 1. The ejection of Jalen Carter during the game may have contributed to their poor performance.

In Week 1, Javonte Williams had a multiple touchdown night against the Eagles. Meanwhile, the Jaguars gave up the third most fantasy points to the quarterback position (19.8) and the most passing yards per game (257.4) last season. This could make them a favorable matchup for opposing quarterbacks in the upcoming games.

Baker Mayfield is without his offensive coordinator, wide receiver Chris Godwin, and left tackle Tristian Wirfs for the Bucs' game against the Falcons. Wirfs, who led the league in pass blocking grade last season per Pro Football Focus, will be missed in the Bucs' offensive line.

The Falcons' second year quarterback Michael Penix Jr., will be without right tackle Kaleb McGary and possibly wide receiver Darnell Mooney in Week 1. This could potentially make them a weaker team in the upcoming games.

The Denver Broncos allowed the third fewest rushing touchdowns per game (0.6) and the third fewest points per game (19.0) in 2024. Their strong defense could make them a tough team to beat this season.

The Chicago Bears defense allowed the fewest passing touchdowns (17) and had the eighth highest pressure rate (36.8%) with 40 sacks last season. This could make them a formidable opponent for opposing quarterbacks.

The Arizona Cardinals allowed the fifth fewest rushing yards per game (102.7) in 2024. This could make them a tough team to run against this season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons are playing each other in Week 1, with the Buccaneers favored by 2.0 points and the game having a predicted total of 48.5 points. This could potentially be a high-scoring game.

The Saints defense allowed the third most rushing yards per game to running backs (141.4) and the sixth most fantasy points per game (20.6) to the running back position. This could make them a favorable matchup for opposing running backs in the upcoming games.

In Week 1, Jalen Hurts finished Week 1 with 24.28 fantasy points and two rushing touchdowns against the Cowboys. This could potentially make him a strong fantasy option for the upcoming games.

The best fantasy matchups for NFL positions in Week 2 are quarterbacks like Justin Herbert (chargers) facing a Raiders defense that allowed almost 300 yards last week, and Jayden Daniels with his rushing upside against a Green Bay defense that limited Jared Goff; for running backs, Drake Maye showed huge potential against the Raiders; wide receiver Deebo Samuel benefits from increased slot usage via Jayden Daniels; specific top quarterback rankings list Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and Joe Burrow as strong starters; no exact worst matchups were highlighted, but some defenses like Green Bay's limiting Jared Goff suggest tougher matchups for similar QBs.
