Holy Cross Football Stuns Top 10 Class 2A Team Bracken County

In an unexpected turn of events, the Holy Cross football team, under the guidance of head coach Dan Curran, has made a strong start to the 2025 season. After a four-year drought, Holy Cross has managed to secure a 2-0 record, a feat last achieved in 2016.

The team's latest victory came against Bracken County, a team ranked among the top 10 in Class 2A. The game was a nail-biter, with Holy Cross securing a narrow 25-24 victory.

The first quarter of the game saw a flurry of activity. Sophomore quarterback Brian Ferguson scored the first two touchdowns for Holy Cross. In response, Bracken County managed to score two touchdowns of their own, but missed the point-after kicks on both occasions.

The second quarter saw a 35-yard field goal from Gabriel Romito, giving Holy Cross a halftime lead of 17-12. The momentum shifted in the third quarter when Fryman, from Beechwood, scored a touchdown early on a punt return. However, Holy Cross responded with a two-point conversion, thanks to Max Hunt's 52-yard kick return for a touchdown and Charles Oglesby's subsequent two-point conversion run.

In the fourth quarter, Bracken County managed to score the game's final touchdown, but the point-after kick was blocked. Meanwhile, Max Runge kicked a 20-yard field goal for Brossart in the same quarter, and Brady Boruske recovered a fumble for a two-point safety for Brossart.

Elsewhere in the high school football scene, Dayton scored a impressive 62-49 victory at their new on-campus field, marking the highest point total by a Dayton team in over 25 years. Beechwood, the Class 2A state champion from last year, continued their winning streak with a 53-6 victory over Newport Central Catholic.

Other notable scores from the weekend include Highlands defeating Cooper 28-14, Nicholas County defeating Bellevue 26-6, Scott defeating Bullitt Central 35-21, Ryle defeating Conner 44-0, Cincinnati Elder defeating Covington Catholic 28-20, Lloyd defeating Newport 46-6, Ludlow defeating Holmes 42-18, and Boone County defeating St. Henry 40-6.

In other games, Hamilton Badin (Ohio) defeated Dixie Heights 66-21, Simon Kenton defeated Western Brown (Ohio) 43-24, and the Campbell County vs Pulaski Southwestern game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Logan Zembrodt kicked a pair of field goals for Covington Catholic, while Cash Harney completed 11 of 16 passes for 172 yards with one interception for Covington Catholic. Dylan Gaiser had the only rushing touchdown for Covington Catholic, and Emmett Queen, a first-year quarterback, and junior Tyler Fryman connected for two long touchdowns in Beechwood's game against Newport Central Catholic. (One was a 28-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game and another was a 73-yard scoring pass in the second quarter.)

As the season progresses, Holy Cross will look to build on their strong start under the leadership of coach Curran. The team's next game is eagerly anticipated by fans and pundits alike.
