Ford's New Winter-Resistant Van, a Potential Disruption to Camping Experiences Across Europe
The Ford Transit Custom Nugget, introduced to the European market in 2023, is making waves in the world of camping and van life. With its unique features and affordable price, it's quickly becoming the go-to vehicle for those seeking winter escapes.
One of the Nugget's standout features is its high, hard-top roof, providing ample space for a comfortable living area. Fully-equipped Nuggets, capable of accommodating a family of five, are available for rental.
As the 2024 model hits the roads, the Nugget boasts an elongated wheelbase, offering even more space for adventure. The 2025 model takes it a step further, with a longer wheelbase of 16.5 to 17.9 feet, and a focus on all-weather protection. This model is dubbed "winter-proof" by Ford Authority, a testament to its robust design.
The new Westfalia converted pop-up roof of the 2025 Ford Nugget offers a large sleeping area, additional space for storage, and a focus on practicality and functionality. This model, not yet available in the U.S., can be rented in the U.K. and New Zealand through Roadsurfer starting at $88 (£65) per night.
While the Nugget itself may not be directly available in the United States, a professionally built Ford Transit AWD camper van, similar in concept and based on the Ford Transit chassis, is set to hit the market in August 2025. This new model will come with full warranty and off-grid, four-season capabilities.
Meanwhile, camper van conversion companies like Winnebago in the U.S. market are also making a mark. Their Class-B camper vans offer excellent technology features, a pop-up rooftop, lots of living space, and flexible seating options. The Winnebago Solis and Travato, built on the Ram ProMaster chassis, are prime examples.
The rise of van life in recent years has seen a diverse range of enthusiasts, from part-time travellers to full-time nomads. As the Ford Transit Custom Nugget continues to shape the way Europeans camp, it's clear that this trend is here to stay.
