Foreign visitors fail to attend events
In August 2020, the tourism industry in North Rhine-Westphalia experienced a significant decline, with a total of 20.1 million overnight stays, a decrease of 42.7% compared to the previous year. This drop was primarily due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to travel restrictions and decreased travel demand.
The number of guests during this period was 1.4 million, a decrease of 34.1% compared to August 2019. Among the accommodation establishments, holiday homes, apartments, and centers recorded an increase with 57,139 arrivals (+3.3%) and 309,763 overnight stays (+1.1%). On the other hand, cabins, youth hostels, and similar establishments saw the highest decreases, with 36,257 guests (-58.7%) and 87,957 overnight stays (-62.6%).
Foreign arrivals were below the average, with 246,000 visitors, a decrease of 50.8% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. This trend was consistent throughout the first eight months of 2020, with approximately 8.0 million guests visiting accommodation establishments and campsites in North Rhine-Westphalia, a decrease of 49.7% compared to the same period last year.
