Former bandmates of Sting, Sting's old Police bandmates, file suit to claim a piece of the earnings from Every Breath You Take's royalties.
In an unexpected turn of events, former bandmates Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland have filed a lawsuit against their ex-Police colleague, Sting (Gordon Sumner). The High Court in London has issued a writ in this matter, with Sting and his publishing company Magnetic named as defendants.
The lawsuit centres around the iconic song "Every Breath You Take," released in 1983. According to Summers, he is the one who created the famous guitar riff that sets the moody and hip atmosphere of the track. He claims responsibility for the distinctive guitar figure that has become synonymous with the song.
Summers' initial guitar part for "Every Breath You Take" was not present on the original version of the song. He came up with the riff in the style of The Police, transforming it into the brooding, intense undertow that underlines Sting's lyrics. His contributions, he believes, warrant a co-credit and royalties.
The lawsuit seeks a co-credit and royalties for Summers and Copeland, claiming they are owed millions in lost royalties. Lawyers have tried to reach an out-of-court settlement, but a stalemate was reached, leading to the lawsuit.
Andy Summers' demo for "Every Breath You Take" was somewhat perky, a stark contrast to the dramatic finished track. Summers' guitar playing on the final version of the song is compared to the finished track, with his initial part setting the stage for the song's eventual success.
The court has yet to issue a ruling on the lawsuit. Sting has yet to comment on the matter, and no new information about an out-of-court settlement has been reported. The lawsuit is ongoing, and the music industry watches closely as this legal battle unfolds.
