Former ministers Anisul and Menon have been detained following their remand.

In a significant development, two former ministers, Anisul Haque and Rashed Khan Menon, have been remanded in custody by a Dhaka court. The court order came following the completion of their five-day remand on charges of involvement in the killing of Mehedi Hasan during the July Uprising.

The remand was granted on 20th August, after a hearing in the Dhaka court. The investigating officer took the former ministers into custody on the same day in connection with the killing of Mehedi Hasan.

Mehedi Hasan was a participant in a peaceful protest in the Kazla area of Jatrabari on 18th July last year. Tragically, he was injured in a shootout involving police and Awami League leaders and activists during the protest. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died around 6pm.

A murder case was filed at Jatrabari Police Station following Mehedi Hasan's death. The investigations regarding his killing are still ongoing.

The order to continue the investigation against Anisul Haque and Rashed Khan Menon was given by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh on 29th March, 2023.

The former ministers have been in jail since the court order. They were produced before the court after the remand period ended. The investigating officer petitioned to keep them in jail until the investigation is completed.

The court order to send them to jail was passed by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rakibul Hasan. The current status of the investigations regarding Mehedi Hasan's killing remains unclear, but the case continues to be a topic of national interest.
