Breaking News: Terror Attack in Mulhouse, France
A terror attack has occurred in the city of Mulhouse, France, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The incident, which took place during a demonstration in support of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been described as an "Islamist terror act" by President Emmanuel Macron.
The attack was carried out by a 37-year-old suspect who is on a terror prevention watchlist, known as FSPRT, which was launched in 2015 following deadly attacks in France. The suspect, who was under surveillance, house arrest, and had a deportation order, was arrested in connection with the murder and attempted murder in Mulhouse on Saturday.
The attack started with a knife attack that left one civilian, a 69-year-old Portuguese national, dead and three others injured. Three police officers were also lightly injured during the incident. Among the seriously wounded police officers, one sustained an injury to the carotid artery, while the other sustained an injury to the thorax.
Mulhouse Mayor Michele Lutz expressed her shock and grief, stating "Horror has seized our city." In response to the attack, the city established a security parameter, and military units were sent to the scene as backup. Forensic scientists were working hurriedly to examine blood stains before rain could wash them away.
The PNAT is investigating the attack for murder and attempted murder "in connection with a terrorist enterprise." President Macron stated there was "no doubt" that the incident was a "terrorist act." The suspect is reported to have shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the attack.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is expected to travel to the scene of the attack later Saturday. The people of Mulhouse, a city of around 110,000 inhabitants, are left in shock and mourning, hoping for a swift resolution to this tragic event.
