France's President Macron announces completion of negotiations on security assurances for Ukraine
France's President Emmanuel Macron has announced that security guarantees for Ukraine have been prepared, following a summit at the White House in mid-August. The exact nature of these guarantees remains undisclosed, but they have been developed by a coalition of Ukraine's Western and European partners, including G7 countries and numerous NATO and European states.
The contribution of the security guarantees was prepared, documented, and confirmed by the ministers of defense in strict secrecy. The document containing the security guarantees is now awaiting political approval.
Zelensky, the Ukrainian President, has expressed appreciation for the progress made on the security guarantees and considers them as real, tangible support, not symbolic promises. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has called for the "coalition of the determined" to start planning concrete work on the possible deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine.
The "coalition of the determined" summit is scheduled for the following day. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has expressed hope for clear answers regarding what security guarantees Europe can offer Kyiv at this summit.
The preparation of the security guarantees was completed after the Ukraine summit at the White House. However, the location of the political approval for these guarantees is not specified. Similarly, the timing of the political approval is also not clear.
It's worth noting that previous coalition initiatives, initially met with skepticism, have been implemented and are currently working. This suggests that the international community is committed to supporting Ukraine's security and sovereignty.
Macron received his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, at the Élysée Palace on September 3. After their discussion in Paris, leaders of European countries participating in the "coalition of the determined" will call President Donald Trump of the United States.
The work done by military leaders after the Ukraine summit has laid the groundwork for swift action after a peace agreement is reached. The exact nature of the security guarantees will likely be revealed at the upcoming summit, providing much-needed reassurance to Ukraine and the international community.
