Fraudsters Target Senior Citizens
In separate incidents on September 3rd, two senior citizens from Mechernich and Weilerswist fell victim to fraud and theft outside their respective banks.
In Mechernich, an unknown individual approached a senior citizen outside a bank on WeierstraΓe around 12:28 PM. Claiming to need to exchange money, the perpetrator successfully tricked the senior into exchanging two 2-euro coins for two 1-euro coins. The amount stolen was in the low three-digit euro range.
The fraudster, described as a Caucasian male, approximately 165 cm tall, around 30 to 35 years old, slim/normal build, short brown hair, no beard, and wearing glasses, needed the senior's debit card and PIN to prevent the alleged transaction. After the exchange, the fraudster withdrew a sum in the low four-digit euro range from the ATM inside the bank and fled the scene in an unknown direction.
In Weilerswist, an incident occurred at a bank on Peter-Vey-StraΓe around 10:30 AM. An unknown individual approached a senior citizen outside the bank and asked to change money. Upon returning home, the senior noticed cash had been stolen from his wallet. The alleged perpetrator was an individual claiming to be a bank employee. The amount stolen was in the mid-four-digit euro range, but no further details about the incident have been made publicly available.
