Freight train collision in November causes ongoing delays in Kazakhstan's rail service

In a unexpected turn of events, Kazakhstan is currently grappling with train delays and cancellations, primarily attributed to the derailment of a Talgo train in the Karaganda region on September 6, 2025. The incident has caused significant logistical issues, disrupting the system of locomotive movements across the country.

The derailment has blocked the road in both directions and backed up many trains, leading to a cascade of delays. Minister Kairbek Uskenbayev, in a recent statement, revealed the impact of the incident in the Senate corridors and mentioned the cancellation of the Almaty - Petropavlovsk Talgo train, which will remain canceled until December 15. The Talgo train from Astana to Shymkent has also been temporarily canceled.

The cancellations are partly due to weather conditions, but the ongoing challenges caused by the train derailment are the primary culprit. The Talgo trains are subject to additional technical inspections due to ministry requirements as they travel at higher speeds.

The specific details about compensation for Talgo train delays are yet to be announced. However, it's important to note that the Talgo train delays are not included in the compensation plan discussed by KTZ. Minister Uskenbayev stated that it may take a few more days to address the aftermath of the train derailment.

The incident has resulted in temporary accommodation and food shortages at stations, as there were no previous issues with train delays. The initial plan was to resolve the issues caused by the train derailment in four days, but it may take longer.

Minister Uskenbayev asked for patience from the public, stating that the delays are not expected to last for months, just a few more days. He emphasised that the cancellations may lead to further logistical issues and train delays in Kazakhstan.
