Fresh insights about the historical castle in Dresden revealed in archaeological findings
In the heart of Dresden, a unique hiking trail invites history enthusiasts to embark on an informative and relaxing walk. Known as the Archaeo-Pfad Dresden, this twelve-kilometer trail was initiated in May 2020 and has since become a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
The trail passes through the picturesque towns of Prohlis, Kauscha, and Nickern, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the region. It was created through the initiative of a group led by Nickern local historian Steffen Böhnke and was officially approved by a city council resolution in April 2014.
The Archaeo-Pfad Dresden has been developed in close cooperation with the Prohlis district office, the Palitzsch Museum, the Prohlis Heimatverein e. V., and the Saxon State Office for Archaeology. Twelve info-stele have been installed along the trail, providing information about archaeological objects, industrial history events, and local landmarks.
One of the most notable info-stele is located at the corner of Dohnaer Straße/Gamigstraße, offering insights into the castle and park Prohlis. The trail also provides a timeline for quick chronological orientation, making it easy for visitors to understand the historical sequence of events.
Since the trail's inception, it has been revitalizing the area, with the Prohlis district office working together based on historical models. The fourth updated edition of the orientation plan is currently available for pickup at various locations, ensuring visitors can navigate the trail with ease.
Remains found so far during the excavation include a door, glass and ceramic fragments, cables, remains of a sign, an iron cover, a safe door, a heel, metal parts, a compass, stucco elements, and tiles of the castle's bathroom. All found objects are the property of Moritz Freiherr von Crailsheim, and decisions about which pieces will enter the collection of the Palitzsch Museum will be made with him.
The Neorenaissance castle, which once stood proudly in the "Prohlis Grove," burned down in 1980 and was demolished in 1985. However, the spirit of the castle lives on through the Archaeo-Pfad Dresden, which aims to uncover the buried structures under professional guidance and awaken interest in Prohlis local history among children.
Since 2021, around 25 school classes and many individuals have been participating in the museum pedagogical project "In Search of the Prohlis Castle." The project has been successful in fostering a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the region's history among the younger generation.
It's important to note that in 2000, the "Prohlis Grove" was returned to the descendants of the last castle owner. However, the available search results do not provide information on who has regained the property of the former Prohlis Castle since the year 2000.
