Fresh start for Donnarumma following club switch and new management in Italy
Gianluigi Donnarumma, the current captain of Italy's national football team, has expressed his ambition to guide his country back to the pinnacle of international football. The 23-year-old goalkeeper, who made his Serie A debut at just 16 years old, believes he has already achieved great things but is determined to take Italy back to where they belong.
Donnarumma's move to England is imminent, with the goalkeeper set to join Manchester City after Italy's Group I matches against Estonia and Israel. His transfer comes after a four-year stint at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he was recently replaced by Lucas Chevalier. Despite this, Donnarumma insists he has no ill will towards his former club and finds it fortunate that a club like Manchester City wants him.
Donnarumma's leadership skills were evident under Stefano Gattuso at AC Milan when he was still a teenager. Gattuso, who replaced Luciano Spalletti in June after a troubled start to Italy's qualifying campaign, is once again counting on Donnarumma's abilities. The goalkeeper appreciates the directness of his coach at PSG, Luis Henrique, from the first day of training, and expresses confidence in Gattuso, stating that he knows what he can bring.
Italy's qualification for the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico is a more realistic route for the Azzurri, who failed to reach the play-offs for the last two World Cup tournaments. The team's goal difference is 12 worse than Norway's in qualifying, and they have played two games fewer. With nine points separating them from Norway, Italy is at risk of missing out on a third straight World Cup.
Donnarumma was instrumental in Italy being crowned European champions in 2021, and he is excited about being wanted by Pep Guardiola, one of the best coaches in the world. The goalkeeper signed his City contract during an international break at Italy's Coverciano training camp, and he is now focused on helping his country qualify for the World Cup and then aiming for glory on the global stage.
As Donnarumma prepares for his new challenge in England, he remains committed to his goal of taking Italy back to where they belong. With his leadership, skill, and determination, he hopes to inspire a new generation of Italian footballers and lead the Azzurri to success.
