Friendly competitive outing with companions, reclaiming self-assuredness at the US Open: Jessica Pegula's revival at the tennis tournament

On a thrilling Thursday during the qualifying rounds of the US Open, Jessica Pegula is poised to make a comeback. The American tennis star, currently in the semifinals without dropping a set, is eager for a rematch against her formidable opponent, Aryna Sabalenka.

Pegula's journey to the semifinals has been far from smooth. A difficult North American summer, marked by early exits and dwindling confidence, has tested her resolve. However, Pegula has found solace in the memories of past triumphs, particularly her run to the US Open final a year ago. This experience has banished doubt and instilled a newfound belief in her abilities.

Pegula's love for playing at Flushing Meadows goes beyond the tennis court. The noise and smells of the stadium, she says, create an electric atmosphere that is both rowdy, funny, and a little chaotic. This connection with the venue has given her an extra edge, making her feel more confident hitting the ball here than anywhere else.

However, Pegula's path to the semifinals has not been without challenges. She was outplayed in previous meetings against Sabalenka, but the prospect of revenge at the US Open has fuelled her determination. After a disastrous practice session, Pegula sought solace in an unusual place - an escape room with her friends.

Mark Knowles, Pegula's co-coach, notes that she felt very comfortable from the first match at the US Open. This confidence has been evident in her nine out of ten match wins, including a tournament victory in Toronto and a final appearance in Cincinnati before the US Open.

As Pegula prepares to face Sabalenka once more, she aims to be more engaged in the fight, enjoy the crowd more, and make the most of this opportunity to play another Grand Slam final. With her sights set on victory, the US Open promises to be an exciting tournament for all tennis fans.
