Fugitive Arrested in Manitoba Following Deadly Accident: Mom and Child's Killer Caught Nine Months After Evading Authorities

In a significant development, the man wanted in connection with a fatal crash in Manitoba that claimed the lives of Sara Unger and her daughter Alexa, has been apprehended after nine months on the run.

The incident occurred on November 15, 2024, at the intersection of Provincial Road 201 and Provincial Road 306 near Altona. The driver of the semi, who hails from Brampton, Ont., fled the scene but was eventually apprehended by the Mounties.

Cpl. Jamie Sokolosky of the Pembina Valley RCMP detachment expressed gratitude to everyone who put their concerns and comments out there, implying that public support was important in the apprehension.

The driver was charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death. He was also charged with obstructing a peace officer. The charges against him also include those for the fatal crash that killed Sara Unger, a 35-year-old woman, and Alexa Unger, an 8-year-old girl. Alexa later died in the hospital due to injuries from the crash.

The investigation into the fatal Manitoba crash was a combined effort involving multiple policing organizations, including the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Peel Regional Police, and Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement. The man was picked up by members of the CBSA and Peel Regional Police when he arrived at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

The man will be escorted back to Manitoba by police where he will remain in custody. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the consequences of dangerous driving.
