Gaming company Maverick files for bankruptcy, leading to the closure of four casinos in Washington state.

Maverick Gaming, a prominent casino operator with a significant presence in Washington and Nevada, has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 14, 2025. The filing was made in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, listing between $100 million and $500 million in assets and liabilities.

Reasons for Bankruptcy

The bankruptcy filing comes after a strategic review of Maverick Gaming's capital structure and operations. Rising debt obligations, operational challenges, competition, regulatory limitations, and economic slowdowns have been identified as key factors.

Maverick completed a debt exchange in 2024 that extended debt repayment terms and provided cash, but included payment-in-kind provisions. Higher cash interest obligations starting in 2025 strained the company's finances. In Washington, four of Maverickโ€™s cardroom casinos closed after the Washington Gaming Commission declined to approve regulations allowing centralized surveillance systems, hindering Maverickโ€™s operational competitiveness compared to larger casinos.

Implications for Casinos in Washington and Nevada

The Chapter 11 filing includes plans to sell four Washington cardrooms for about $13 million to a stalking horse bidder. In Nevada, Maverick operates five casinos, including Wendover Nugget Hotel & Casino, Red Garter Hotel & Casino (West Wendover), Maverick Casino & Hotel Elko, Gold Country Casino, and High Desert Inn (Elko). Though no closures have been announced yet, the bankruptcy and restructuring could affect these properties, depending on the sale or restructuring outcomes.

Maverick intends to pursue a restructuring or sale process under bankruptcy court supervision, including renegotiating leases and selling assets, aiming to preserve value for stakeholders while continuing operations during this process.

Maverick Gaming's Challenges in Washington

Maverick Gaming's primary market is Washington, where it owned 21 gaming establishments prior to the recent closures. The company has faced challenges in Washington due to restrictions on non-tribal gaming establishments. In 2022, a federal lawsuit was filed by Maverick Gaming alleging that the sports betting monopoly violates the equal protection principle under the Constitution. However, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals definitively rejected the lawsuit in December 2022, adding to Maverick's legal expenses and effectively blocking its entry into the profitable sports betting market in Washington.

Closures Across Maverick Gaming's Portfolio

Several casinos have already been closed as a result of Maverick Gaming's restructuring. These include Silver Dollar Renton, Palace Casino (Lakewood), Roman Casino (Seattle), and Dragon Tiger Casino (Mountlake Terrace) in Washington, and Silver Dollar Renton in Nevada.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board is monitoring the situation and will take appropriate measures to protect the interests of players and employees if necessary.

Despite the challenges, five gaming establishments in Nevada continue to operate normally: Wendover Nugget, Red Garter, Maverick Casino & Hotel, Gold Country Casino, and High Desert Inn.
