GATE 2026: Key Updates and Changes
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, is gearing up to conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. Here are the important details about the upcoming examination.
Dates and Application Fees
The GATE 2026 examination will span over four days, taking place in two sittings – forenoon and afternoon. Candidates can apply during the regular period from August 28 to September 28, with the application fee set at Rs. 1,000 for Female, SC, ST, PwD candidates, and Rs. 2,000 for all other candidates. For those who miss the regular period, an extended duration is available from September 29 to October 9, with the application fee rising to Rs. 1,500 for Female, SC, ST, PwD candidates and Rs. 2,500 for all other candidates.
Exam Format and Fees for Multiple Papers
For the first time, candidates will have the option to appear for two papers in GATE 2026, provided the combination is permissible. It is important to note that the fee for selecting two papers will be charged separately.
Subjects and Usage of Scores
A total of 30 subjects will be available for candidates to choose from in GATE 2026, with a new subject, Energy Science (XE-I), being introduced.
The scores obtained in GATE 2026 will remain valid for three years from the date of announcement of the results. These scores are widely used by various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, etc. for hiring candidates. Additionally, premier institutes in India use GATE scores for admissions to M.Tech, M.E., and PhD programs.
Moreover, certain international institutions also consider GATE scores for postgraduate admissions, making it a globally recognized examination.
