Gathering call from Marburger Network scheduled for September 2nd
The "Marburger Network for Democracy and against Right-wing Extremism" is set to host a network meeting on Tuesday, 2nd September, following the summer break. The event will take place at the Technology and Conference Center (TTZ), Softwarecenter 3, 35037 Marburg, starting at 6 pm.
The theme of the meeting is "Hate Speech". Stefanie Zacharias from HateAid, a non-profit organisation that advocates for human rights in the digital space, will be giving a presentation on this topic. Zacharias' presentation will focus on concrete recommendations for political and societal action, as well as individual action, to foster a better coexistence that respects freedom of expression and enables participation.
Before the presentations, members of "Omas gegen Rechts Marburg" will share their experiences with hate speech. In the spring of this year, after painting parking spaces in rainbow colors as part of an action, members of "Omas gegen Rechts Marburg" were exposed to hate postings on social media.
Hanno Wilk, head of the Internet Crime department at the Hessian General Prosecutor's Office, will speak about the legal dimension of hate speech. Wilk's speech will address questions such as: "What is punishable? What does the justice system do? How can I defend myself? Is filing a complaint worthwhile?"
The meeting will now take place on the first Tuesday of every month from September onwards, a change decided by the network council in a meeting in June. After the presentations, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss with the speakers.
The Technology and Conference Center (TTZ) is the location for the network meeting. This network meeting is just one of the regular updates from the town hall and city life that you can receive by signing up for the newsletter of University Town Marburg.
Please note that the speaker on the legal aspect of hate speech at the event on September 2, 2023, is not explicitly identified in the available search results. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting and engaging in a meaningful discussion about this important topic.
