"Gathering for Gaza Support: Agreement and Controversy Surrounds Left-Wing Protest"
The Left party in Germany is gearing up for a rally and demonstration, scheduled for September 27 in Berlin, under the title "Together for Gaza - Stop the Genocide!". This event, aimed at putting pressure on the federal government to end its support of Israel's war crimes in Gaza, has been postponed from its original July date to allow for a more peaceful and inclusive protest space free from discrimination.
The demonstration's initiators, Ines Schwerdtner and Γzlem Demirel, have been instrumental in organizing this event. The Left party has been actively involved, with a clearer stance on the Palestine question emerging from internal discussions. However, the party acknowledges the challenges of finding a unified line due to differing generations and viewpoints within its ranks.
The demonstration's demands are multi-faceted. Among other things, it calls for a ceasefire, the release of illegal prisoners in Israel and Gaza, and freedom of opinion and assembly on this topic. It also includes a demand for a stop to arms exports, reflecting the party's stance against violence and repression.
The Left party has been vocal in its criticism of the repression against the Palestine solidarity movement, deeming it disproportionate. The party also stands against maps suggesting that a people does not have the right to live in a certain area. Instead, it advocates for Israel as a state for all its residents, with equal protection for all population groups and equal citizenship for all.
The Left party supports the freedom of Palestine as a state and has been increasingly aligning with experts who use terms like "apartheid" or "genocide" to describe the war crimes and hunger in Gaza. It is worth noting that the party has criticized party executive board member Ulrike Eifler for sharing a picture of an Israeli-Palestinian map with Palestinian colors.
In the spirit of constructive dialogue, the Left party emphasizes the importance of keeping internal discussions open and understanding, with ears tuned to each other's perspectives. A zero-tolerance policy for antisemitic statements has been established for the demonstration.
During the demonstration, The Left will be present as a party with a block, standing alongside the people of Gaza in their struggle for peace and justice. The party encourages all those who share these values to join them in Berlin on September 27.
