Despite this setback, Theo remained at the mine as a disabled person and retrained as a forklift driver and clay noodle maker.
In 1968, Theo took over and ran the snack bar on Gerther market square. He was granted permission for small-scale retail of spirits on August 6th, 1968, and for the sale of non-alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, and other refreshments on August 12th, 1968.
Theo's refreshment stand quickly became a popular spot on the market square, which developed due to industrialization through the Zeche Lothringen mine. The Gerther market quickly developed into a shopping center, also for surrounding districts such as Hiltrop, Bergen, and Harpen.
Theo's organisational talent was evident, as he became a foreman on the machine storage site. He was a successful businessman, being entered in the commercial register as a full merchant in 1979. Tragically, Theo passed away at the beginning of 2020 at the age of 90.
