"Gaza City has seen the demolition of approximately 50 tall structures, as stated by Netanyahu"
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, both sides have called for significant concessions. The Israeli government has demanded the complete disarmament of Hamas, while the Islamist group has demanded a complete withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from the Gaza Strip.
The violence has not been limited to the Gaza Strip. Israel and Hezbollah have been accused of violating a ceasefire agreement reached in late November. This escalation has alarmed aid organisations, who warn of a further deterioration of the already catastrophic situation of the civilian population in Gaza.
The Israeli army has been operating in the northern West Bank, claiming to target terrorist organisations. This military action has resulted in the destruction of high-rise buildings in the Gaza area, allegedly used by the Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas. Over two days, the Israeli air force reportedly destroyed 50 such buildings.
The violence has claimed innocent lives as well. Two 14-year-olds were reportedly killed by Israeli soldiers' gunfire in Jenin, a city in the West Bank. Meanwhile, the civil defense controlled by Hamas reported 59 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks throughout the Gaza Strip, with 38 in the city of Gaza.
In response to the escalating violence, US President Donald Trump is pushing for a negotiated solution to the Gaza conflict. Netanyahu announced a planned military operation to seize the city of Gaza, but has since called on residents to flee and warned of a ground invasion. He also stated that around one million people were still in Gaza until recently.
In a contrasting move, a special summit in Qatar involving Arab and Islamic states has called for an arms embargo against Israel to halt its military actions, opposing Israel’s continued aggression.
Negotiations on the conditions for an end to the war are to begin after the ceasefire. A proposed US comprehensive agreement between Israel and Hamas involves the release of all living hostages in the Gaza Strip within 48 hours of a ceasefire. Hamas has expressed readiness for a comprehensive agreement including hostage exchange and a technocratic national administration for Gaza.
However, Hamas needs more time to retrieve dead hostages. The Israeli army is to halt its offensive in the city of Gaza in exchange for the handover of hostages. Five members of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah were killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, the international community is urging both sides to exercise restraint and seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The loss of life and destruction of infrastructure must be minimised to ensure the safety and well-being of all civilians involved.
