German reality TV actor Tobias Moretti expresses his discontent
Tobias Moretti, the renowned Tyrolean actor, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of regional dialects on German television. In an interview, he criticized the uniform use of standard language and what he calls "Reality TV German" as a "horror."
Moretti, who gained fame in the 90s as an investigator in the TV series "Kommissar Rex," values dialect, especially when dealing with literary standard language. This appreciation for dialect is evident in his latest role in the improvisation series "Die Hochzeit," where he plays a Tyrolean hotelier and speaks dialect fluently.
Born and raised in Tyrol, Moretti is no stranger to the nuances of dialect. Before his acting career took off, he studied music and composition in Vienna. Today, he resides on a farm in Tyrol, maintaining close ties with his roots.
Moretti emphasized the importance of regional dialects in German television, stating, "As a native of Tyrol, I value the nuances of dialect especially in contrast to literary high German. I criticize the flattening of both dialects and standard language into a uniform, bland 'Reality-TV-German,' which I call a horror."
On September 5, audiences can see Moretti in "Die Hochzeit" on ARD. With his profound understanding of dialect and his dedication to preserving it, Moretti continues to be a strong advocate for the use of regional dialects in German television.
