Enhancing military aid to Ukraine's forces is on the table for the federal government. Yet, the notion of sending troops to Ukraine following a ceasefire is deemed inappropriate at this juncture.

In a significant development, European partners held a one-hour phone call with US President Donald Trump to discuss the results of a summit aimed at agreeing on a ceasefire in Ukraine. The summit, attended by 35 heads of state and government of the "Coalition of the Willing," was initiated by former US President Donald Trump, who announced plans for upcoming communications and diplomatic meetings aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict.

The proposed summit, which saw participation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was held partly in person in Paris and partly by video conference. The goal of the summit was to find a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Germany, a key player in the discussions, has expressed its readiness to further increase aid to Ukraine. However, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasised that a decision on military engagement will be made at an appropriate time when the framework conditions are clear. The Bundestag, Germany's federal parliament, holds the final say in a deployment of the German Armed Forces.

Germany's focus, as of now, is on financing, arming, and training the Ukrainian armed forces. This is in line with Germany's role as the most important partner of Kyiv in this regard. The European partners have expressed their hope for continued significant US contribution to supporting Ukraine.

The US, for its part, is expected to continue contributing to joint efforts, formulating security guarantees, and shaping a goal-oriented diplomatic process. If the Russian side continues to delay, Europe will increase the pressure of sanctions to enhance the chances of a diplomatic solution.

Chancellor Merz has also advocated further efforts for a Ukrainian-Russian summit. The nature and scope of US engagement, as well as the outcome of the negotiation process, are factors in the decision-making process for potential military involvement in Ukraine.

In conclusion, the discussions held at the summit mark a significant step towards finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The focus now shifts to the decision-making process regarding military engagement and the continuation of diplomatic efforts.
