Global shipments of mirrorless cameras witness an increase by 10%, with one standout contender recording the swiftest growth rate.
Mirrorless Camera Market Grows Significantly in 2024
The mirrorless camera market saw a substantial growth in 2024, with a total increase of 10% and overall shipments rising from 4.76 million to 5.22 million units. This growth was shared by all major brands, including Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic, and OM Digital (formerly Olympus).
Canon led the market with a 5% increase in sales, shipping a total of 2.05 million mirrorless cameras, making them the market leaders. Sony followed closely behind, with a 10% growth in shipments and holding the second biggest market share with 1.63 million units shipped.
Nikon also showed a strong performance, with a 21% increase in sales attributed to the introduction of two new models, the Nikon Z50 II and Z6 III, in 2024. Fujifilm's growth can be explained by the introduction of two affordable models, the Fujifilm X-M5 and X-T50, both released in 2024. Panasonic also grew by 14% in shipments.
While OM Digital (Olympus) experienced a 10% growth in shipments for mirrorless cameras, they shipped the lowest number of units compared to the other brands. It's worth noting that the data does not include all brands, with Leica notably missing.
Interestingly, the growth of the mirrorless camera market outpaced the DSLR market, with mirrorless cameras now outselling DSLRs by a factor of 5. Canon still sells almost 800,000 DSLRs a year (in 2024), making them the market leaders in that sector as well.
Nikkei and DClife.jp have published global shipping information for the mirrorless camera market, revealing that Fujifilm and Pentax showed increasing sales in the DSLR market between 2023 and 2024 and were not included in the report.
In summary, the mirrorless camera market experienced a significant growth in 2024, with all major brands showing increased sales. While Canon and Sony led the market, Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic, and OM Digital (Olympus) also saw growth, albeit at varying levels. The data does not include Leica, leaving room for further analysis and comparison in the future.
