Sphere Entertainment Expands to Abu Dhabi with New Venue
Sphere Entertainment, known for its immersive entertainment venues, is set to expand its footprint to Abu Dhabi with the announcement of a new venue that mirrors its 18,600-seat venue in Las Vegas, which opened in 2023. This venture is a result of a long-term franchise, development, and service agreement with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT), granting DCT exclusive rights to develop, build, and operate the venue for at least a decade [1][3].
The agreement involves a one-time franchise initiation fee paid in tranches aligned with construction milestones, ongoing quarterly royalties based on a percentage of ticket sales and other revenues with guaranteed minimums, and fees for pre-opening services such as design and construction support. Further operational service contracts are planned before the venue’s launch [1][3]. This arrangement provides Sphere with an asset-light expansion strategy, generating predictable cash flow through royalties without heavy capital expenditures, while the DCT secures exclusivity to meet regional demand for innovative entertainment venues.
However, specific financial details like exact fee schedules and royalty percentages have not been publicly disclosed, leaving the precise economic impact somewhat opaque. Additionally, risks such as political, construction, and tourism-related factors in Abu Dhabi will need ongoing monitoring to ensure project completion and operational success [1][3].
Meanwhile, in the gaming world, Galaxy Entertainment continues to dominate the premium mass market in Macau, while Crown Resorts is in talks to take over Queen's Wharf operations from Star [2]. Sands has unveiled a new Baccarat jackpot in Macau, and Seaport has revised its forecast for Macau’s 2025 GGR, projecting a 7% year-on-year growth, despite ongoing China-US economic rifts [5].
In other news, The Luxe, a new high-stakes slot game with a monochromatic luxury theme, and Orphan Organ, a slot game with an alien horror theme, have been introduced [4]. The UK Labour Party is facing an internal split over demands for gambling reforms [6]. Pollard Banknote has been approved by the GCGRA to supply gaming-related products in the UAE, including instant tickets and digital gaming products [7]. Regulators in South Korea are investigating payment firms for alleged ties to illegal gambling networks.
In leadership changes, Sue van der Merwe is stepping down as CEO and MD of Australia's Lottery Corporation, with Wayne Pickup taking over the role [8]. Airlock upgrades are a part of Orphan Organ's design, and The Meter Pays mechanic is a feature of Orphan Organ.
