Goalkeeper Andre Onana has reached an agreement to depart from Manchester United in a transfer deal
In a surprising turn of events, AndrΓ© Onana, the former Inter Milan and Manchester United goalkeeper, is set to join Trabzonspor on loan from the Red Devils. This move comes after the Turkish transfer window closes on September 12.
Onana's stint at Manchester United has been fraught with challenges, with limited game time being a significant factor. His sole appearance this season was in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby, where he was at fault for one of the goals. Despite Erik ten Hag seeing Onana as the man to revolutionise the way Manchester United played out from the back, the Cameroonian struggled to impress since joining the club in 2023.
Ruben Amorim, the Manchester United manager, has given more opportunities to Altay Bayindir over Onana, with Bayindir starting the Red Devils' opener against Arsenal, while Onana was on the bench. Even after Onana's return to fitness, Amorim elected to keep the former Ajax man on the bench. Amorim's confidence in Onana seems to have waned, and when asked why he didn't play Onana against Fulham, Amorim's tone changed, suggesting limited game time for Onana.
The arrival of Senne Lammens at Manchester United from Royal Antwerp on Deadline Day further pushed Onana down the pecking order, potentially leaving him out of the matchday squad if he stays rather than go on loan to Trabzonspor.
Onana's injury in pre-season is unlikely to have helped his situation at Manchester United, and his poor performance against Lyon, resulting in two goals, may have contributed to his limited game time. In a bid to secure more playing time, Onana asked for a pay rise at Manchester United this summer.
However, Onana will earn more at Trabzonspor than he does with Manchester United due to a signing on fee and bonuses. This, coupled with Amorim's preference for Bayindir, seems to have convinced Onana to seek opportunities elsewhere.
It's worth noting that before his move to Manchester United, Onana did not play for a Turkish club; he joined Manchester United directly from Inter Milan in 2023 and was later loaned to Trabzonspor in 2025. Onana's departure from Manchester United marks the end of a chapter for the former Inter Milan shot-stopper, who arrived at Old Trafford with a big reputation, having played a huge role in Inter Milan reaching the Champions League final the season before moving to England.
Amorim defended Onana at the end of last season, saying he'd made more mistakes than the Manchester United goalkeeper. However, it appears that the manager's stance has changed, leading to Onana's decision to seek opportunities elsewhere. As Onana prepares to join Trabzonspor, fans and pundits alike will be eager to see how he fares in his new environment.
