Microsoft's AI chief executive reveals that Google contemplated releasing a ChatGPT-like model, but internal opposition, apprehensions about disrupting search services, and safety apprehensions halted the project.

Google was on the verge of releasing a chat-based AI model similar to ChatGPT, according to Microsoft's AI CEO, but doubts of some, worries about disrupting search, and safety concerns reportedly halted the project.

In an interview on July 15, 2025, Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft's AI division, reflected on the past and the future of artificial intelligence (AI). Suleyman, who co-founded Inflection AI after leaving Google DeepMind, made a bold claim that if timing had been different, the world would be talking about Personal Intelligence rather than ChatGPT.

Suleyman played a significant role in developing LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) while at Google. He described LaMDA as "ChatGPT before ChatGPT," a model designed to speak our language more naturally and exhibit human-like conversation capabilities, which he named Personal Intelligence.

However, LaMDA was never launched due to concerns over safety and potential disruption of Google's search business. After leaving Google, Suleyman co-founded Inflection AI and raised $1.5B to build a 22,000 H100 GPU cluster. With this infrastructure, Inflection AI developed and launched Personal Intelligence in January 2023, seven months before OpenAI launched ChatGPT.

Personal Intelligence was optimized for personality, emotional intelligence (EQ), kindness, and being a friendly companion. The AI quickly gained traction among users, offering a more human-like interaction experience compared to other AI models available at the time.

The interview also touched upon AI's potential impact on the job market and AI consciousness. Suleyman expressed his views on the ethical considerations that should be taken into account when developing and deploying AI systems.

Meanwhile, AI-powered browsers from companies like Perplexity's Comet and OpenAI's soon-to-launch browsers are becoming a reality and gaining traction among users. These advancements in AI technology continue to reshape the digital landscape, raising questions about the role and future of AI in our daily lives.
